I love a good viral outbreak. The emotions sweeping the nation, a hero or heroine attempting to reach family without succumbing to illness…wait, you know I mean viral outbreaks in FICTION, correct? In real life, viruses are NOT fun at all. However, in fiction, there is no chance of actually catching something (unless a certain toddler has sneezed all over my kindle again). Today, for the letter V in the A-Z Challenge, I decided to spread the word (see what I did there?) about some great viral outbreak stories. I’ve read a few of these, but some are new adds on my to-be-read list.
I hope you catch something you like today! ::disinfects Kindle again::
Prep for Doom Anthology by Band of Dystopian Authors and Fans
I reviewed PFD when it came out last year. It’s still one of the most unique anthologies I’ve read.
Synopsis: From the imaginations of twenty authors of dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction comes PREP FOR DOOM – an integrated collection of short stories that tell the tale of a single catastrophe as experienced by many characters, some of whom will cross paths.
What begins with a seemingly innocuous traffic accident soon spirals into a global pandemic. The release of Airborne Viral Hemorrhagic Fever upon New York City’s unsuspecting populace brings bloody suffering within hours, death within a day, and spreads worldwide within a month.
An online community called Prep For Doom has risen to the top of a recent doomsday preparation movement. Some have written them off as crazy while others couldn’t be more serious about the safety the preppers could provide in a global disaster. But when AVHF strikes, their preparation may not be enough to save them.
From authors Laura Albins, ER Arroyo, Amy Bartelloni, Brea Behn, Casey L. Bond, TK Carter, Kate Corcino, Harlow C. Fallon, Kelsey D. Garmendia, Caroline A. Gill, DelSheree Gladden, John Gregory Hancock, Casey Hays, Kate L. Mary, Jon Messenger, Monica Enderle Pierce, Cameo Renae, Hilary Thompson, Yvonne Ventresca, and Megan White. Buy link on Amazon
Pandemic by Yvonne Ventresca
Love this one!
Synopsis: Even under the most normal circumstances, high school can be a painful and confusing time. Unfortunately, Lilianna’s circumstances are anything but normal. Only a few people know what caused her sudden change from model student to the withdrawn pessimist she has become, but her situation isn’t about to get any better. When people begin coming down with a quick-spreading illness that doctors are unable to treat, Lil’s worst fears are realized. With her parents called away on business before the contagious outbreak—her father in Delaware covering the early stages of the disease and her mother in Hong Kong and unable to get a flight back to New Jersey—Lil’s town is hit by what soon becomes a widespread illness and fatal disaster. Now, she’s more alone than she’s been since the “incident” at her school months ago.
With friends and neighbors dying all around her, Lil does everything she can just to survive. But as the disease rages on, so does an unexpected tension as Lil is torn between an old ex and a new romantic interest. Just when it all seems too much, the cause of her original trauma shows up at her door. In this thrilling debut from author Yvonne Ventresca, Lil must find a way to survive not only the outbreak and its real-life consequences, but also her own personal demons. Buy link on Amazon

Synopsis: After the world was ravaged by a viral apocalypse, Blackwater is one of the only colonies that remains. The survivors came together to create this safe haven. Nestled between a fierce river and a city’s flood wall, the well-being of its residents hangs on a long-established treaty with the night-walkers. Sounds simple enough, but lately, the people of Blackwater have been dying, and the humans believe the night-walkers are to blame.
Porschia Grant starves for more than her parents’ affection. Forced to enter the rotation, she will be given extra food rations in exchange for becoming a vampire’s breakfast and dinner for a week. The rotation has an extra responsibility as well: leave the colony and enter the dangerous forest to hunt for food. A night-walker will protect the hunters from the infected that roam the woods. But with the treaty hanging in the balance and tension between the humans and vampires rising, anything could happen in the darkness.

Book four comes out on April 28th, but I have a lot of catching up to do with this series because book 1 is still hanging out on my Kindle. Waiting.

But Liam pledged he would document the destruction of the world. He’s inspired to write a tell-all book. It would be his way of recording for the history books who was responsible for creating the zombies and unleashing them upon mankind. To do that, he needs to go back outside the wire of safety.
Liam and Victoria head upriver to the one place they know holds clues to the zombie plague: a deep, dark pit mine. Their plans are complicated by a young woman Liam rescued on his final flight from St. Louis. She wants to accompany them on the journey north. At first she appears harmless, but as they reach the mine, and find who and what’s inside, her loyalties become more and more suspect.
Grandma, unsure of her own mental state, believes she’s seen the strange girl before. In her dreams.
